Students will learn to combine mathematics, statistics and probability in order to solve real-world problems involving data in the Statistics Program. At CMU, class sizes are small and faculty are passionate about teaching, which makes the learning experience vibrant and interactive. Professors know their students personally, and there's a close-knit community in the classroom. A university-wide emphasis on undergraduate research also makes CMU a fantastic place to be a statistics major as there are various opportunities to collaborate on projects across multiple disciplines.

With the statistics concentration in mathematics, students develop problem-solving, logical and critical thinking skills. While completing the required coursework, students gain an understanding of the nature of proof, a general understanding of mathematics and an understanding of statistical reasoning, necessary assumptions and the correct use of statistical analysis procedures.

Academic Requirements for Bachelor of Science in Statistics, Mathematics

A Minor in Statistics is a natural enhancement to many majors outside mathematics where an understanding of statistical analysis of data is needed (e.g. biology, business, psychology, sociology, history, human performance and wellness, political science).

There is also an excellent track record of CMU statistics graduates being accepted to the graduate program of their choice.
